Adulting Is
Actually a Scam
Nobody warned us.
Survival mode with vibes.
Adulting Is Actually a Scam
Growing up, everybody made adulthood look sweet. Adults had freedom. Adults had money. Adults could travel. Adults could do whatever they wanted. What they didn't tell us was the most important part.
Nobody Knows What They're Doing
When you were younger, adults looked like they had life figured out. Now that you're grown, you've realised something shocking: everybody is just vibing and hoping for the best.
Your manager
Vibing.
Your landlord
Vibing.
That uncle that always gives advice at family meetings
Vibing.
Even you
Vibing.
You just wake up every morning and say: "God abeg." Then you continue.
The Bills Are Aggressive
Nobody explained that adulthood comes with...
The monthly list
• Rent
• Data
• Electricity
• Transport
• Food
• Something will just spoil in your house randomly.
Your account balance is always playing hide and seek. And life doesn't care. You could be down bad and Spotify would still deduct from your last card, and you compulsorily have to eat Mavo's lyrics. Because what do you want to do?
You Now Understand Why Parents Were Always Angry
When you were younger, your parents used to shout about everything.
Then
"Who left this light on?!"
You thought they were overreacting.
Now
"WHO DIDN'T TURN OFF THIS SOCKET?"
Electricity bill will humble anybody.
Sleep Is Now a Luxury
As a child you used to fight sleep. Now sleep is the best thing that can happen to you. You even plan sleep.
"Let me just lie down small."
Next thing your alarm is ringing for work.
Nigerian Weekends Are a Scam Too
You think you'll finally rest. But Saturday comes with a checklist.
Saturday agenda
• House cleaning
• Laundry
• Errands
• Market runs
• Fixing things that suddenly stopped working
By Sunday evening you're already mentally preparing for Monday.
Random Prices Will Scare You
You never really understand the prices of certain items until you become a proper adult.
Everybody Is Managing
If you ask any Nigerian adult how things are going, the answer is always the same:
"Ah we thank God, we're managing." Rather
It's bills.
It's responsibilities.
It's stress.
Final Thoughts
But somehow people are still laughing, still building, still chasing dreams.
Which honestly is impressive.
Because if you can survive adulting in Nigeria... you can probably survive anything.
